India is rapidly emerging as a global leader in leveraging AI to enhance road safety, with innovative solutions being implemented both domestically and internationally.

    AI-Powered Fleet Safety Systems

Indian deep-tech startup Netradyne has developed the Driver•i platform, an AI-powered fleet safety and video telematics solution that analyzes driving behavior with up to 99% accuracy. This technology has led to a 50% reduction in accident rates among users in India and the U.S. Netradyne is also developing new features to detect driver fatigue and inebriation, aiming to further improve road safety.

Similarly, urban mobility company Cityflo has implemented a comprehensive AI-based driver safety system across its metro fleets in Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Delhi. This system includes Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) technologies to enhance driver performance and passenger safety.

    Government Initiatives and Regulations

The Indian government has launched the Road Safety Plan 2025, aiming to halve road fatalities through AI-driven monitoring and infrastructure modernization.  The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has also released draft regulations mandating Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for commercial vehicles carrying eight or more passengers by April 2026.

AI in Public Transportation and Urban Monitoring

Public transport agencies are adopting AI to improve safety and efficiency. Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) plans to equip all its buses with AI-enabled CCTV cameras to monitor driver behavior and passenger demographics, aiding in route optimization and revenue tracking.

In Ahmedabad, the municipal corporation is deploying AI-powered dashcams on municipal vehicles to detect potholes, traffic violations, and other urban issues in real-time, enhancing civic monitoring and road safety.

    Conclusion

India’s integration of AI into transportation systems is significantly contributing to global road safety advancements.Through innovative technologies and proactive government policies, India is setting new standards in reducing road accidents and enhancing driver and passenger safety worldwide.
